Policy: Mass Transit

Charleston Trident Home Builders Association

A healthy and viable region has a mass transit system that provides its citizens with automobile options which primarily allow service industry workers greater access to employment. The Charleston Trident Home Builders Association supports this approach through an effectively managed bus system. The Charleston area should learn from the other growth areas such as Portland, Washington DC and Atlanta which have spent billions of dollars on light and hard rail that it is not effective in reducing traffic congestion. Most of these areas have also lacked the ability to build new roads. This is clear in the research paper “The Great Rail Disaster” which studied mass transit vs. road construction and reached the conclusion that road building and widening is the most cost effective way to reduce traffic congestion. This paper also supports that the most cost effective mass transit is a bus system.
