High Point Highlights: A glimpse at this season’s design trends

While browsing show rooms at High Point’s Fall International Home Furnishings market, we noticed that the spring trends from March are still prevailing for fall and spring with some new additions. Click here to see examples of these trends…
Color:
Choose from any of these hot colors to create your enticing interior:
- Earthy tones: neutrals including creams, taupes and grays (which are being forecasted as the “new” browns of the season) along with rich browns and sage greens saturate the earthy-toned palette
- Red hues: reds illuminated numerous big-name showrooms including Global Views, Bungalow 5 and Chelsea House in furniture, accessories and décor. Look for red or scarlet finishes on everything from furniture pieces to accents.
- Purples: look for ranges between lavenders to deep eggplant this season. From the Hickory Chair show room at market to the covers of House Beautiful and House and Garden and threads throughout Osborne & Little’s and Designers Guild’s fabrics, purple seems to be the new “it” color.
- Metallics: these shimmering tones have carried over from last season and are holding strong for spring 2008 as well. Look for these in wallpapers, fabrics, finishes, paints and accessories for an instant dose of sophistication. These tones mix well with other colors and can add interest and dimension to your room.
- Black: add a metropolitan edge with black accents in lamp shades, furniture finishes and mirrors. Martha Stewart and Shine Home showcased new black décor items at this year’s market. Incorporate these with sleek, sharp-edged furniture for the ultimate loft appeal.

Décor Influences: look for these elements on furniture, fabric and accessories
- Asian/Eastern influence: note the bold prints and colors with intricate Asian toiles along with eastern-inspired angles and curves similar to Asian architecture.
- Rustic Chic: you will notice many weathered woods and nail-head embellished furniture pieces mixed with rusted metals and reinvented antiques.
- Animal prints: python prints and textures popped at this year’s market from furniture pieces to mirrors, rugs, and tableware from big names including Two’s Company, Zodax and Asha. Hides, though not as prevalent as this spring, are also still very popular.
- Texture: velvets prevailed in upholstery at market providing soft seating with chic appeal. Linen fabrics provide a classic canvas for overlays of velvet damasks and intricate prints.
